What is a Death Claim?
When the life assured dies during the Term of the policy i.e. before date of maturity, proceeds under the policy as a claim, is payable to the beneficiary which is called as Death claim.
The person entitled to the proceeds must complete certain forms giving due proof of the death and establishing the claimant's right to such proceeds. When filed with the company, the company is said to have received a death claim.

How do I intimate a death claim?
The information regarding a death claim can be intimated by the claimant or any near and dear ones of the Life Assured through the following modes of communication:
- By calling our toll free Customer Service Helpline number
- By logging on a request through our website
- Visit our nearest branch and submit Intimation of death with copy of Death certificate.

What documents need to be submitted for death claim?
Death claims for the sake of processing are split into 2 different categories, as below:
- Natural Death Claim
- Unnatural Death Claim
In case of a natural death claim, the following standard documents will be required:
- Original Policy Document and Death Certificate
- Claimant’s Statement and photo ID proof (In case the death has taken place outside India, the Claimant is also required to submit ‘Death Abroad Questionnaire)
- Attending Physician’s Statement, Hospital Treatment Certificate with relevant medical records
- Employer’s Certificate Form, incase employed and details of other insurance policies
- Legal evidence of title where there is no nomination, assignment or the policy has not been issued under Married Women's Property Act
Unnatural death claims are those where the death of the Life Assured occurs for any reason other than natural or due to illness. In such cases, the following additional documents need to be submitted.
- First Information Report
- Post - Mortem Report
- Police Inquest Report
- Panchanama Report
In case of death due to accident, the above documents would be a necessity. News paper cutting’s (if any) may be submitted.
The Company may in certain conditions call for additional requirements as warranted.
ARLI may also have an investigation made into the bonafides of any claim where it is considered necessary.

What documents need to be submitted with Accidental Disability/ Dismemberment claims?
This Rider pays part/ full Face Amount to the life assured, if the Life Assured looses certain specified body part/s in an accident (for more information please refer the Policy document for Rider Provisions) provided that:
Dismemberment occurs while the Rider is in force, and due proof is submitted to ARLI that dismemberment was caused solely by external, violent and accidental means.
In case of an Accidental Disability/ Dismemberment claim, the following documents will need to be submitted:
- Claimant’s statement and ID proof (preferably the driving license copy of the Life Assured)
- Original policy document
- First Information Report
- Police Inquest Report
- Hospital Certificate and/or Attending physician's statement
- Employer's Certificate Form, incase employed and details of other insurance policies
The Company may in certain conditions call for additional requirements as warranted.
ARLI may also have an investigation made into the bonafides of any claim where it is considered necessary.

What documents need to be submitted for claiming benefits under CI rider?
Critical Illness Benefit pays 100% of the Critical Illness Sum Insured on survival of 30 days following the date of occurrence or confirmed diagnosis of the life insured suffering from one of the following 9 Insured Critical Illness Conditions. Following a Critical Illness claim, the Death Benefit and any other rider benefit remains unaffected.
Following 9 Critical Illness conditions will be covered:
- Cancer
- Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery
- Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction)
- Kidney Failure (End-stage Renal Failure)
- Major Organ Transplant
- Stroke
- Paralysis
- Heart Valve Surgery
- Surgery for a disease of the Aorta
There is a waiting period of 90 days specified under Critical Illness rider i.e. if the life insured is diagnosed with any of the critical illnesses during first 90 days from the date of policy, claim is not payable and the rider will be terminated.
In case of a CI claim, the following documents will need to be submitted:
- CI Application form and Original policy document
- Hospital Certificate and/or Attending physician’s statement
- Employer’s Certificate Form, incase employed
- Details of other insurance policies
- Copies of ALL medical reports including:
- Admission Card and Discharge Summary
- All Laboratory reports & Specialist reports etc.
- Diagnosis of the disease or condition
- Histopathology reports (if applicable)
The Company may in certain conditions call for additional requirements as warranted.
ARLI has a right to direct medical examination of the Life Insured and confirmation of the diagnosis of an Insured Critical Condition by a medical practitioner appointed by us.

Once all the requirements are submitted, how much time does the Company takes to settle the claim?
Company settles the Claim within 30 working days after all the records, documents and necessary forms are submitted and documentation is completed. In case the claim warrants an investigation then the insurance company has to complete the investigation not later than 6 months from the time of lodging the claim

Who is entitled to receive the Death Claim benefit?
The claim monies can be paid to any of the following:
- Assignee, incase policy has been assigned or
- Nominee or
- Legal Heirs, incase of open title case or rival claimant case
- Appointee, incase the nominee is a minor

What happens if there is no nomination on death of the LA or what happens if both the LA and the Nominee expires in the same event?
Such claim is considered as Open Title claim. In such an eventuality a “Succession Certificate" or “Probate of will” will have to be submitted by the Claimant.
A Succession Certificate is issued on application by a competent court on the question of the right to the property of the deceased. The Succession Certificate should specifically provide for disbursement of policy monies.
If, however, the deceased has left a will, a probate of the will is required along with the copy of the will.

What if there are two or more nominees, how will the Policy Monies be paid?
If there are two or more nominees, then a joint discharge will have to be given. The claim proceeds would be paid jointly to all the nominees. Alternatively all the nominees can give a joint discharge for payment of claim benefits in favor of one nominee, in which case the claim proceeds would be made in the name of the designated nominee

If the nominee dies during the tenure of the Policy what is the next step the Life Assured should do?
The Life Assured should nominate another person in Place of the deceased Nominee under section 39 of the Insurance Act.

What is Maturity Claim?
The payment to the Life Insured / assignee at the end of the stipulated term of the policy is called maturity claim.

How will I be paid my claim amount on maturity?
ARLI will send information regarding the maturity of the policy in advance, along with the forms to be filled. If the required documents are sent duly completed and signed, along with original Policy Document the payment is sent by post or can even be directly credited to your specified bank account.

What will I receive on maturity of my policy?
Maturity benefit is specified in the terms and conditions of particular policy type and the same is payable at the end of the term on the Maturity date of the policy if the Life assured survives the policy Term. Benefit will be different for different products/ plans.

What if the policy is in lapse status?
No death benefit is payable if the policy is under lapse status in case of Term policies. For death benefit with respect to Unit-Linked policies, please refer to the policy conditions stated at the back of your policy document.

In case of any claim dispute where can my case be represented?
The claimant has to first approach the Customer Care department of the company in case of a claim dispute. In the event of response being dissatisfactory for the claimant, the policyholder/claimant may write to the Grievance Redressal Cell of the IRDA, which will then take up the matter with the concerned company.
If the complainant is looking for a judicial decision in respect of claims, he or she may approach the Insurance Ombudsman. For more information on Insurance Ombudsman, please refer to your policy document

Are terrorist attacks covered by our policies?
Please note that ALL .Death Benefit. Claims under Base plan caused on account Terrorist attacks are covered by our policies. However, ADDD rider excludes .war, terrorism, invasion, act of foreign enemy, hostilities, civil war etc. and hence benefit under ADDD will not be payable if the insured event is a result of terrorist attacks.
The above condition is specified under the Terms and Conditions of ADDD rider.
